Why Trapping and Killing Bats Does Not Work
Attempting to trap, poison, or kill bats is not only highly illegal under North Carolina law, but it is also completely counterproductive. Here is why:
- The Vacant Entryway: If you remove bats but leave the structural gaps open, the scent of the colony remains. New bats will quickly discover the entry points and move in, starting the cycle all over again.
- Starving Pups: If a mother bat is trapped or killed during pup-rearing season, her flightless babies are left to starve inside your walls. This is not only inhumane, but it also creates severe odor, decay, and sanitation issues within your home.
- Destruction of Insect-Eaters: Bats are essential pollinators and insect controllers. Protecting them keeps WNC gardens and neighborhoods healthy.
How Our Safe Exclusion Works
Because bats cannot be legally relocated off-site, our licensed Wildlife Control Agents use custom-fit one-way exit valves. These allow the bats to safely exit the building at night to forage. When they return, they find their entry points gently blocked. Once the colony has safely exited, we permanently seal the gaps (fascia boards, gable vents, ridge caps) with corrosion-resistant metal mesh and animal-proof sealants.
Compassionate Attic Cleanup & Sanitization
To address leftover guano safely, our technicians use a biological wet-misting sanitization process. By spraying a gentle wetting agent, we prevent microscopic fungal spores (which can cause histoplasmosis) from becoming airborne. We then remove the material and apply bio-enzymatic deodorizers that completely break down scent trails, ensuring your attic smells clean and does not attract other wildlife.

THE NC BAT MORATORIUM
To protect helpless, non-volant (flightless) baby bats, North Carolina law bans active exclusions and one-way valves from May 1 through July 31. During this pup-rearing season, exclusions cannot be performed.
THE COEXISTENCE PIVOT
If you discover a bat colony during this window, our technicians immediately seal all interior pathways leading to your living spaces to ensure your family’s safety. We also recommend mounting an external bat house on your property to offer an alternative shelter. On August 1st, our team returns to install the permanent one-way valves and secure the roofline.
A Real Bat Exclusion, Start to Finish
1. The One-Way Valve
We fit a custom one-way valve over the gap the colony is using. Bats can push through to leave and forage at night, but can’t get back in. Every other opening on the structure is sealed at the same time, so there’s nowhere left to re-enter.
2. Permanent Gable Vent Armor
We monitor the valve for several nights to confirm the whole colony has cleared out. Once we’re sure the attic is empty, the valve comes off and the opening is armored for good with rust-proof steel mesh, fitted tight so it can’t be pried or chewed through.
3. Attic Cleanup, After the Bats Are Gone
With the colony safely excluded, we wet-mist the guano before it’s ever disturbed, since dry guano can release airborne Histoplasma spores. We extract it with HEPA-filtered equipment, decontaminate the space, and leave the attic clean.
Can I get bats removed from my attic in the summer?
Not between May 1 and July 31. North Carolina law bans active bat exclusions during that window to protect flightless pups. If you find bats during the moratorium, we seal off interior pathways to your living space for safety and return August 1st to install the permanent one-way valves.
Is bat guano actually dangerous to clean up myself?
Yes. Dry guano can release Histoplasma spores that cause respiratory illness if disturbed. Our technicians wet-mist it first to keep spores from becoming airborne, then remove it with HEPA-filtered equipment. We don’t recommend DIY cleanup of any meaningful accumulation.
